Roulette Glossary



Even though Roulette seems to be a simple game and presumed to be guided by the luck of player but it still requires its players to be familiar with the terms used in the game.  Most of the roulette glossary is quite easy to understand but there are still some terms which can confuse a player because of their French origin.  In this article we will go through both English and French terms which make an essential part of the roulette glossary.

A Cheva: Split Bet in French

Action:  The bet amount for a particular session of game.

Backtrack:  The outer rim of the roulette wheel where the ball moves.

Bankroll:  The total amount of money intended for gambling.

Bet on the Layout:  A bet made on the numbered section of the roulette table.

Carr’:  Corner Bet in French.

Cheval:  Split Bet in French.

Colonne:  Column Bet in French.

Column Bet:  An outside bet that covers twelve numbers in long column that includes 1-12, 13-24 or 25-36.

Combination Bet:  A bet covering multiple numbers at same time.

Corner Bet:   A bet placed on the intersection of the four adjoining numbers thus covering all four.

Double Zero Wheel: The American roulette wheel.

Dozen Bet:  An outside bet covering twelve numbers out of three sets of twelve numbers comprising of 1-12, 13-24 and 25-36.

En Plein: Straight up bet.

European Wheel:  A roulette wheel with single 0 and 37 pockets.

French Wheel:  A roulette wheel with single O marked green in color.

Even Money:   Even bet which pays 1:1.

Even Odd Bet:  An outside bet which can cover all eighteen of even or odd numbers.

En Prison:  Surrender in French.

Five Number Bet:  Used in American roulette covering 0, 00, 1, 2 and 3.

High Bet:  An outside bet covering top half of the number ranging from 19 to 36.

Low Bet:  An outside bet covering bottom half of the number ranging from 1 to 28.

Inside Bet:  A bet that is placed on the numbers printed inside the boxes of the roulette table.

Outside Bet:  Even money bets used for covering odd/even, high/low and red/black.

Orphelins:  Orphans in French.  This bet covers three different numbers which or close on the wheel but not on the board.

Red or Black Bet:  An outside bet made on all eighteen red coloured or eighteen black coloured numbers.

Roulette System:  Roulette Betting System.

Single Zero Wheel:  European or French roulette wheel.

Sixainne:  Six line bet in French.

Six Number Bet:  An inside bet covering six numbers also known as line bet.

Spin:   Each session of the roulette game is called spin.

Split Bet:  An inside bet placed between two numbers thus covering them both.

Straight Bet:  A single bet either on a single number or in form of a single combination bet.

Straight Up Bet:  An inside bet place on one number.

Street Bet:  An inside bet covering three numbers by placing bet on end of the row.

Trio Bet:  A bet covering three numbers.  Street Bet.

Transversale:  Street Bet in French.
